Let's Get Rid of Black Friday. Cyber Monday Rules!
I'm a huge Cyber Monday fan, and today I'm suggesting we get rid of Black Friday altogether and just make Cyber Monday into a week long sales event. Here's why.
Cyber Monday is a lot nicer than Black Friday, in so many ways.
First, the name is alone is a lot sweeter. Cyber has a kind of cool, futuristic feeling to it; Black on the other hand seems foreboding and depressing, commonly associated with death and destruction. I know back in the 1970's when Black Friday was born, it was meant to indicate the beginning of the period when retailers were finally "in the black", but that meaning has certainly been lost and it now conjures up a pejorative connotation.
Second, if you look at the vicious activity that shoppers engage in on that day, it only seems to bring out the worst in so many. Putting "Black Friday incidents" into Google, you actually get fascinating results, but this is my favorite: "13 Most Brutal Black Friday Injuries (http://bit.ly/sJ5THe) which include shootings, trampling, fights and of course, now pepper sprays. Black may now be more closely associated with the bruises you may receive while participating in the event.
Third, we'll help save the environment. There'll be no need for consumers to take gas guzzling drives to the stores, and no extra electric charges for keeping lights and heating on all hours of the day and night for the retailers. Our planet will appreciate it.
Last year, Cyber Monday became the biggest online shopping day of the year, and according to the NY Times ,(http://bit.ly/tI1sKB) , the first day ever that online spending passed $1billion. Impressive. And it's expected that this year will meet or exceed that number. So let's just extend Cyber Monday so that it goes from midnight Thursday through midnight Monday and we'll call it Cyber Celebration Days. Just saying it makes me feel good.
Let's join together to make the world a better place, and keep everyone at their computers so they can shop shop shop and not worry about getting foot traffic into the stores…just for these few days. I think we'll all feel better about ourselves.
